Why Support Christian-Owned Businesses? | SOPAGA

Why Should Christians Support Christian-Owned Businesses?

Every purchase supports something.

Most of us don't think about it that way. We need coffee, a birthday gift, a new shirt, something for the house, or another everyday product, so we open our phones, find what we need, click “buy,” and move on.

But what if Christians became more intentional about where those purchases went?

If you're going to buy the product anyway, choosing a Christian-owned business can turn an ordinary purchase into an opportunity to support a family, strengthen a small business, create jobs, and put resources into the hands of people who desire to steward their businesses according to biblical principles.

That doesn't mean Christians should never shop anywhere else. It means Christian businesses deserve the opportunity to earn our business.

Our Spending Has Influence

Jesus said, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.” — Matthew 6:21

We often apply this verse to giving, saving, or personal finances. But stewardship doesn't stop when we go shopping.

Every dollar we spend enters someone else's economy.

It helps a company grow. It pays employees. It funds new products. It gives business owners the ability to invest, hire, give, serve, and influence their communities.

Individually, buying a bag of coffee or a birthday gift may seem insignificant.

Collectively, however, the purchasing power of millions of Christians is enormous.

The question is worth asking:

What could happen if more of that purchasing power intentionally supported Christian entrepreneurs and businesses?

Supporting Christian Businesses Is About Stewardship, Not Exclusion

Supporting Christian-owned businesses doesn't require believing that every Christian business is automatically better or that Christians should refuse to buy from anyone who believes differently.

Businesses should still provide excellent products, good service, fair prices, and trustworthy experiences.

Christian business owners should be held to a high standard.

Colossians 3:23 tells us:

“Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord, and not for men.”

Christian entrepreneurs should strive for excellence precisely because their work is ultimately done for God.

But when two businesses can meet your need, and one of them is owned by someone seeking to honor God through his or her work, why not give that business an opportunity?

Your Purchase Can Help a Christian Family and Small Business Grow

Behind many Christian-owned businesses isn't a giant corporation.

It's a person.

It's a mom packing orders after her children go to bed.

It's a husband and wife trying to build something together.

It's an entrepreneur taking a risk.

It's someone creating jobs in a community.

It's a family trying to turn a God-given skill, idea, or calling into sustainable work.

When we support Christian small businesses, we're often doing much more than purchasing a product.

We're helping those businesses survive, grow, employ people, serve customers, support families, and potentially become increasingly generous with what God has entrusted to them.

What Happens When Christian Businesses Become Successful?

This is the part of the conversation that particularly interests me.

What happens when Christian entrepreneurs have greater resources?

Imagine Christian business owners who can hire more people.

Fund ministries.

Support missionaries.

Help families in crisis.

Mentor young entrepreneurs.

Create ethical workplaces.

Build new technology.

Invest in their communities.

Develop products and services that solve real problems.

And generously support the work God has placed before them.

Money itself isn't the mission. Stewardship is.

Deuteronomy 8:18 reminds us to remember God, “for it is he who gives you power to get wealth.”

The purpose isn't simply to make Christians wealthier.

The opportunity is to help build businesses led by people who understand that what they have ultimately belongs to God and should be stewarded accordingly.

Christians Shouldn't Abandon the Marketplace

For generations, Christians have talked about influencing areas such as education, government, media, entertainment, and culture.

Business belongs in that conversation too.

Commerce shapes our world.

Businesses determine what gets built, which ideas receive investment, who gets employed, what technologies develop, which organizations receive charitable support, and which values become embedded in workplaces and communities.

If Christians want to positively influence culture, we cannot abandon the marketplace.

We need Christians building excellent businesses.

And excellent Christian businesses need customers.

Before You Automatically Choose the Biggest Retailer, Look for Another Option

Convenience has trained many of us to begin almost every purchase in the same place.

Need something?

Search. Click. Order.

There isn't necessarily anything wrong with that.

But perhaps we can create one small new habit:

Before you automatically buy from the biggest retailer, see whether a Christian-owned business offers what you need.

You won't always find it.

The price won't always make sense.

The Christian business won't always be the best option.

That's okay.

The goal isn't guilt.

The goal is intentionality.

Give Christian entrepreneurs the opportunity to compete for your business.

What You Support, You Help Grow

This principle extends far beyond shopping.

What we watch grows.

What we recommend grows.

What we invest in grows.

And what we purchase grows.

That's one reason supporting Christian-owned businesses matters.

When thousands of believers make small, intentional decisions about where they spend money, those individual decisions can become something much larger.

They can help entrepreneurs build sustainable companies.

They can help small businesses become employers.

They can help families prosper.

And they can increase the resources available to people who desire to use their businesses, influence, and finances for God's purposes.

A Marketplace Where Christians Can Find and Support One Another

This is one of the reasons I built SOPAGA.

There are Christian business owners all across America creating excellent products, but finding them isn't always easy.

At the same time, there are Christians who would gladly support those businesses if they simply knew where to find them.

SOPAGA exists to help connect the two.

We're building a marketplace where shoppers can discover products from Christian-owned businesses while giving those entrepreneurs an opportunity to grow.

Not because Christians deserve automatic business.

Because they deserve an opportunity to earn it.

So the next time you're already planning to buy something, consider asking one additional question:

Can I buy this from a Christian-owned business?

One purchase may feel small.

But millions of intentional purchases have the power to change a marketplace.

What you support, you help grow.

And together, we can help grow a marketplace where faith, excellent work, entrepreneurship, generosity, and purpose flourish.
